Procedures
- Has a quarantine area been set aside if isolating sick or
newly introduced birds.
- Are procedures in place to be able to contact veterinary
surgeons quickly.
- Are there procedures in place for disposing of dead birds
in an approved manner.
- Are the sheds and environs swept regularly and hosed down
to reduce manure, dust and dirt.
- Is there a program in place to reduce vermin and feral
bird problems.
- Are Biosecurity procedures used in this enterprise eg.
foot baths.
- Are cages,incubators, containers and water bottles routinely
cleaned and disinfected at regular intervals.
Equipment
- Are students made to wear appropriate clothing while
working with birds, eg. overalls,gloves, disposable gloves.
- Is feed stored in sealed containers or silos.
- Are the floor surfaces in and around the shed non-slip.
- Are chemicals stored in a safe manner ( as per MSDS).
- Are cages and containers made from appropriate materials
eg. rust resistant with no sharp edges.
Training
- Are students instructed in the correct procedures for
working with birds eg. catching and holding birds.
Beast Specific Issues
- Are birds regularly checked and treated if needed for
external parasites.
- Are birds regularly checked and treated if needed for
internal parasites.
- Are birds appropriately vaccinated.
Health/Hygiene
- Is protective equipment provided eg. respirators/face
masks to reduce respiratory problems/Asthma, while handling
straw, using dehusking machinery.
- Are wash up facilities readily available (hot & cold
water, soap).
- Have students been instructed in hygiene eg. tetanus
shots, pest and disease transmission.
- Is a well-equipped First Aid Kit readily available.
- Are students warned to take care when entering a mating
cage.
