    Procedures
  • Has a quarantine area been set aside for infected beehives?
  • Are procedures in place to be able to contact apiarist officers for disease notification?
  • Are there procedures in place for disposing of infected hives in an approved manner?
  • Is bee equipment eg. veils, helmets, smokers etc. regularly checked for wear and replaced if needed?
  • Is the bee room swept regularly and hosed down to reduce dust and dirt?

    Equipment
  • Are students provided with or directed to wear appropriate clothing while working with bees eg. overalls, gloves?

  • Training
  • Are students instructed in aspects of personal safety before approaching and examining a beehive?
  • Are students instructed in the correct procedures for removing a bee sting?
  • Are students instructed in the correct procedure for opening and examining a beehive?
  • Are students instructed in the correct procedure for removing supers from the apiary site to the bee room?
  • Have students been instructed in recognition of bee diseases?



  • Beast Specific
  • Are beehives regularly checked and treated if needed for bee diseases?



  • Health/Hygiene
  • Is the student’s allergy status assessed before approaching the bee room and apiary?
  • Are food hygiene procedures in place for containerizing honey? (HACCP)
  • Are wash up facilities readily available (hot & cold water, soap)?
  • Is a well-equipped First Aid Kit readily available?
  • Are Biosecurity procedures used in this enterprise eg. foot baths?
