    Procedures (as per MSDS)
  • Are containers used for storing hazardous substances suitable? (OHS&W Regulations)

  • Are all chemicals stored in accordance with the material safety data sheet(MSDS)?

  • Are flammables stored in approved cabinets?

  • Are chemical containers labelled to legal requirements(ie as detailed on MSDS)?

  • Are incompatible materials stored away form each other?
  • Are MSDS's available for all hazardous substances used in this area?
  • Are only required type and minimum quantity of chemicals stored?
  • Are all chemicals stored in a secure area?
  • Are herbicides stored away from fungicides and insecticides?
  • Have spill control systems been implemented ie earth bunds, absorbing materials etc?
  • Are systems in place to ensure chemical spills are cleaned up to prevent accidents?
  • Are chemicals mixed/prepared at a designated area only?
  • Is ventilation and lighting adequate at the designated area?
  • Are approved procedures in place for the disposal of chemical containers?
  • Are procedures in place for the disposal of excess chemicals (as per MSDS)?
  • Is there a procedure to warn all staff and students when chemical spraying is being undertaken?
  • Are syringes and needles used and disposed of in the approved manner?
  • Are animal carcasses, foetal remains and faeces disposed of in the approved manner?


  • Equipment
  • Are chemicals protected from moisture?
  • Is the storage area free from extremes of temperature and weather?

  • Is the storage area resistant to fire?

  • Is fire fighting equipment available?

  • Is suitable personal protective equipment available and used when mixing and using chemicals?
  • Are all instruments clean and (when appropriate) sharp?
  • Are sheds and yards designed to reduce the accumulation of faecal material and urine?


  • Training
  • Has training been provided for all users of farm chemicals?
  • Are staff and students instructed in correct animal handling procedures?
  • Are staff and students instructed in recognition of signs of illness in animals?


  • Hygiene

  • Are adequate washing facilities available, including soap and hot water?
  • Are appropriate washing dousing facilities available in the event of an accident?
