Plant Nursery

    Procedures
  • Has a quarantine area been set aside for isolating sick plants.
  • Are there procedures in place for disposing of dead and diseased plants.
  • Are the glasshouses and sheds swept regularly and hosed down to reduce dust and dirt.
  • Are Biosecurity procedures used in the nursery eg. foot baths.
  • Have all manual handling tasks been assessed and control measures implemented.


  • Equipment

  • Are students made to wear appropriate clothing while working in the nursery eg. overalls, boots.
  • Is equipment eg. secateurs, budding knives regularly maintained.
  • Are waterproof power points and a RCD safety device in place.
  • Are power boards located well away from water.
  • Is wet floor safety signage used.
  • Is appropriate fire fighting equipment readily accessible.
  • Are the surfaces in and around the nursery non-slip.
  • Are chemicals stored in a safe manner(as per MSDS)?


  • Training

  • Are students instructed in correct nursery hygiene procedures.

  • Plant Specific Issues
  • Are plants regularly checked and treated if needed for external parasites.


  • Health/Hygiene

  • Is protective equipment provided eg. respirators/face masks to reduce respiratory problems/Asthma, while handling potting mediums eg. perlite, vermiculite and bagged soil.
  • Are wash up facilities readily available (hot and cold water, soap).
  • Have students been instructed in hygiene eg. tetanus shots.
  • Is there a well-equipped First Aid Kit available.
