Procedures
- Has a quarantine area been set aside for isolating sick
plants.
- Are there procedures in place for disposing of dead and
diseased plants.
- Are the glasshouses and sheds swept regularly and hosed
down to reduce dust and dirt.
- Are Biosecurity procedures used in the nursery eg. foot
baths.
- Have all manual handling tasks been assessed and control
measures implemented.
Equipment
- Are students made to wear appropriate clothing while
working in the nursery eg. overalls, boots.
- Is equipment eg. secateurs, budding knives regularly maintained.
- Are waterproof power points and a RCD safety device in
place.
- Are power boards located well away from water.
- Is wet floor safety signage used.
- Is appropriate fire fighting equipment readily accessible.
- Are the surfaces in and around the nursery non-slip.
- Are chemicals stored in a safe manner(as per MSDS)?
Training
- Are students instructed in correct nursery hygiene procedures.
Plant Specific Issues
- Are plants regularly checked and treated if needed for
external parasites.
Health/Hygiene
- Is protective equipment provided eg. respirators/face
masks to reduce respiratory problems/Asthma, while handling
potting mediums eg. perlite, vermiculite and bagged soil.
- Are wash up facilities readily available (hot and cold
water, soap).
- Have students been instructed in hygiene eg. tetanus shots.
- Is there a well-equipped First Aid Kit available.
