    Procedures
  • Has a quarantine area been set aside for isolating sick and newly purchased pigs.
  • Are procedures in place to be able to contact veterinary surgeons quickly.
  • Are there procedures in place for disposing of dead pigs/carcass in an approved manner.
  • Is the piggery and environs swept and hosed down regularly to remove manure.
  • Are pens and equipment routinely cleared and disinfected at regular intervals.
  • Are Biosecurity procedures used in this enterprise eg. foot baths.
  • Have all manual handling tasks been assessed and control measures implemented.
  • Is approval sought prior to undertaking after hours duties.


  • Equipment

  • Are students made to wear appropriate clothing while working with pigs eg. boots, overalls, gloves.
  • Does pig transport conform with the road regulations.
  • Is protective equipment provided eg. earmuffs, respirators/face masks to reduce respiratory (asthma) and noise problems.
  • Are floor surfaces in and around the piggery non-slip.
  • Are chemicals stored in a safe manner (as per MSDS).
  • Are yards/pens in good condition.
  • Are all tools well maintained and in proper working order.
  • Is stockfeed stored in sealed containers or silos.
  • Is appropriate fire fighting equipment is maintained and in well marked locations.
  • Are ponds/dams/tanks in fenced off areas.
  • Are waterproof power points and a RCD safety device in place.
  • Are power boards located well away from water.
  • Are Exit routes readily identified.
  • Is appropriate safety signage in place, eg. wet floor


  • Training

  • Are students instructed in correct animal handling techniques eg. moving and controlling pigs.
  • Are students instructed in the correct procedure for loading and unloading pigs from transport.


  • Beast Specific Issues

  • Are pigs regularly checked and treated if needed for external parasites.
  • Are pigs regularly checked and treated if needed for internal parasites.
  • Are pigs appropriately vaccinated.


  • Health/Hygiene

  • Are wash up facilities readily available (hot and cold water, soap).
  • Have students been instructed in hygiene eg. tetanus shots, washing.
  • Is protective equipment provided eg. earmuffs, respirators/face masks to reduce respiratory (asthma) and noise problems.
  • Is a well-equipped First Aid Kit readily available.
